Big News: The Dignity Way is now a research partner with Penn State University’s Dignity Collaborative!
A lot of work has been happening behind the scenes this summer, and I’m proud to announce that The Dignity Way is entering a formal research partnership with Dr. Karen Armstrong and Penn State University’s Dignity Collaborative!
This partnership creates an exciting opportunity to bring greater academic rigor to the work I’ve been doing with schools and organizations: studying what happens when dignity becomes part of how a community operates.
One of the things I’m especially excited about is the development of tools that help us look more closely at dignity—and at what happens when dignity breaks down into contempt. The Dignity Collaborative has developed an Dignity & Contempt Assessment grounded in the work of Donna Hicks, Arthur Brooks, and Montessori principles. It invites educators to examine how dignity shows up in the day-to-day experiences of children and adults, as well as the habits that can undermine it when we experience conflict or disagreement.
This is the kind of work I’ve been hoping to see: moving beyond talking about dignity as an ideal and beginning to study, measure, and understand what it looks like in practice.
For me, this is an important next step for The Dignity Way. I’ve seen the power of dignity in schools and organizations, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to deepen our understanding of what helps communities become places where people feel seen, heard, valued, and respected.
Even more exciting, schools and organizations I work with will have opportunities to participate in this research as it develops.

Registration is open for the next live session of Seeing Through the Dignity Lens. If you want to experience this work before bringing it to your whole staff, this is the place to start. It's also the first, required step into a new six-workshop series launching September 1. More on that below.
